Overview of the Electric Guitar – Lesson 1

In this video, we explain how the electric guitar works as well as explaining each individual part and its function.

Syn’s Tips

Welcome everyone! We are really excited to hang out with you guys as we take this deep musical journey together. The main thing to focus on is that We Are All Here to Help Each Other! We need to spend equal amounts of time learning from one another in the Comments Section Above as we do alone when we are practicing.

Everyone Has Something to Contribute! I don't care if you've never picked up a guitar before, or you are the best player in the world, we should all Listen to Each Other because the one thing that I've found to be true, is that everyone has something to offer!

When I listen to beginners about their learning process, their discoveries, or their favorite bands, at the very least, I learn how to be a better teacher because everyone learns differently. Most of the time, they've discovered something unique that I can apply to my own playing even after all of these years. Even better is that I may benefit from all of that, PLUS, I may discover new music that changes my life for the better, foREVer!

So don't waste any time, head to the "Lesson Comments" section below, or the "Community Forums" and introduce yourselves! You can even upload videos of you playing or demonstrating issues you may be having with a particular lesson. I'm keeping an eye out for those of you who participate the most to reward and recruit for my army of trusted educators!
Help Wanted!

Last but not least, Help Each Other! Answer questions and make comments. We can all acquire multiple lifetimes worth of invaluable information in this glorious age of technology because we can all communicate with each other on a global scale! That My Friends, Is Priceless!

Alex Martinez Hi there, I'm Alex from Mexico. I've been playing for almost 12 years now, but honestly I don't feel like I really know the whole techniques I need to be a great player. So, I will do my best to continue practicing and studying. Hopefully, I can also help some of you and find new riffs or licks from you guys that I can work with for my study.

Jared Gourion Hello everyone I’m jared and im a beginner here with my gender squire lol. I’m a big avenged sevenfold fan I do admit I discovered them while playing Nazi zombies but that’s beside the point. I knew from the first time I heard the sound this band has I knew that synister gates gave it that distinct honestly evilish reverse eagles sound. You are probably bombarded with lots of amazing fans and great guitarists and all that but if your reading this synister Gates I really like the direction the stage went talking about very big problems with our world today but also If you want to learn some life changing music study the doors and Robby Krieger. He was a great guitar player very underrated though because people like him i Hendricks were around but I’m telling you Robby inspired me to work for my first guitar and to try learning. It’s my dream to become the greatest guitarist the world has ever seen. I didn’t know you had this website but I just joined it and it looks amazing and it’s the exact thing I needed in my life. My favorite guitarist from my fav band is building a great idea of community and progress. But everyone else makes me pay for it. It almost puts tears in my eyes that you aren’t in it for the money. I mean that’s what the store is for though it’s a win win and I’ll buy stuff from there 🙂

Kylie Sepulveda Hey everyone! I'm going to introduce myself! Online I'm going by W1CK3DWEST which I know is a weird name to look at. It's simply pronounced "Wicked West" a name I've come up with based on a variety of things that influence me. Just like a lot of you here, I have been an A7X super fan for years upon years. I actually want to learn drums and have wanted this since I first discovered Avenged Sevenfold and The Rev in highschool (RIP foREVer.) Some years ago I purchased an electric guitar for theraputic reasons. I suffer from anxiety and depression and simply feeling the vibrations of the guitar really comforted those feelings. I used to write lyrics about some of my traumas and strum a few strings. I don't feel like a guitarist, nor do I feel like the little fingers and strings I put together we're worthy enough to be called songs and that's ok with me. Like I said I bought it to help me feel better and it did. That being said, thank you Synyster for opening this opportunity for all of us novices and those who are already experienced guitarists. I would very much like to actually learn how to play properly but don't have the money for lessons, and definitely can't seem to grasp guitar on my own. I want to play songs to sooth me, and be able to add music for the stories I want to write. I'm a bundle of ideas and feel like this will help me turn those ideas into something tangible!

Kye Feher Alrighty then! I finally have in my hands the elusive instrument I’ve been waiting for to start my learning! It’s black and white, it’s shiny, it has Fender; Squire; Bullet Strat on the headstock (yup! Just learnt what that is 😂), has the tuning pegs all on one side, and looks like it has 3 pickups? Now what the hell do I do with it?! Save me from myself? (Side note; is there a reason I cannot post in the comments section from my iPhone? I've noticed this with Mac's Patreon page as well... This confounds my tiny, lyric filled brain!)

Carol Seeds Love this video! For my first guitar, my husband purchased a very cheap, very "off-brand" electric, but regardless I am loving it! But one thing I am curious about, my guitar has three pick-ups vs. the two that you prefer Mr. Haner. Are there any specific cons to this that I should watch out for?

Carol Seeds This video was like a breath of fresh air! I learned so much and I love the layout of the lesson. It will be so easy to go back to specific parts when I need a refresh! So my first guitar my husband purchased me a very cheap, very "off-brand" electric; just basically something to learn on as he put it. I am curious as to why you prefer two pick-ups. My guitar has three. Are there any specific cons to having three that maybe I need to watch out for?

Owen Folley Had the classic dream of one day playing on stage with my pals and throwing out some memorable riffs and having an all around great time with everyone. That is still very much the dream! As a result I picked up my very first guitar ( Squier by Fender electric guitar) and instantly fell in love with its Candy Apple red colour and sound I could create with it. As a result i spent a few months learning some tunes like Supermassive Black hole by Muse and Do I wanna know by Arctic Monkeys (as well as some other small tunes). However, as time went on I found myself struggling with the lack of creativity and improvement I was seeing and as a result stopped playing for a fair few months. But as soon as heard Synster was creating a website for learning I was instantly hooked on the idea and am now very excited to pick my guitar and learn along side everyone via Synster and Papa Gates. Regardless of whether I make my dream a reality i'll be stoked to come up with some kick ass musical pieces by myself and show some skills off to my fellow friends and maybe even share some stuff with you all. In the meantime, I'm gonna take my time and very much take on board what is taught via these sessions, which are hella easy to navigate and beginner friendly . So thanks a lot guys! Lets see where I can go, aye!

Daniel Sifuentes I'm very interested about this site, I think this is a good idea and a great way to learn. I can't say I'm a begginer cause I'm not, but all these years I've played the guitar I haven't learned a lot of things, better said, a lot of important things! like scales, chords, and some of that, I can also play difficult songs, but I've started to feel bad because I thing that knowledge is everything to make songs or anything else! So, in the last months I've gotten a real interest about learn everything to be the guitarrist I want to be, In short words: I know how to play but I don't know what I'm playing, and that's really bad! I'm really grateful with you both for creating this amazing site, thank you! To say goodbye, I can speak a little English, that means I can understand you, but I have a lot to learn about the language, so I would apreciate if you can put a kind of translate just for the better understanding of many people(; That's all, hope you read my comment(;

Andrea Kinneer This is a spectacular community that has been created!! I had recently bought an electric guitar from my cousin, and didn't get my first amp until this past Christmas. I was finally able to play my guitar with an amp, and experiment with sounds. On Christmas Day, I realized that this website would soon be fully accessible for the public. It was like another Christmas present to me. I saw it almost as if it was my "fate" to play the guitar due to this exquisite timing. Of course, I know basics of the guitar and how they work, but to be able to access this school gives me the motivation to start fresh as well as keep up with practice. I always put my practice aside because I would either 1) have to wait until the next lesson was uploaded online, or 2) search for hours without end for a specific video with great quality and advice. It utterly bored me to have to do that. But now, I can look for what I need to work on without hassle. Everything I need is here. I appreciate what has been built here. I can guarantee I'll start back up again by tomorrow, and practice everyday after I come home from school! Thank you so, so much. I'm ecstatic to start my journey through guitar playing!! <3

Andreas Laich This whole thing is just awesome, great concept! i think combining professional knowledge, experience and the possibilities of a passionate community has so much potential - and it brings us fans closer to our idols really looking forward to it and already having tons of fun! i'd consider myself a medium player, loved the demo lesson on sweep picking (i could almost feel the process of getting better, even if it was just in my head 😉 great feeling though), but as many here already stated, it's still fun to explore all the basic stuff and maybe relearn things and really going step by step without leaving something out of mind! thanks again, wish you all the best for the future of this project, papa and syn, and hope you enjoy all of this as much as we do!

Jake Taylor First off, the site is amazing. Put together so clean, and the videos are concisely packed with knowledge. Secondly, I have two questions... What is a good level to have the action at? The acoustic guitar I am using seems low towards the nut and exceptionally higher near the 12+ frets. Also, will having a higher action in addition to heavy brass strings on acoustic make my fingers more "trained" for an electric?

If you are in the states and don't have any retail music store near you, I whole-heartedly recommend Sweetwater Sound(sweetwater.com) Their prices are competitive with every other retailer out there, you get a PERSONAL sales rep to help you with every aspect if your purchase and beyond. They also do a 55-point inspection of all guitars $299 and up. I have gotten 3 from them and they are wonderful. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any other questions. I hope that helps! Nichole Gulbrandson Hey Syn and Papa Gates! Congrats on the school! I’m excited to learn from you both! Syn being my all time favorite guitar player makes this even more exciting for me. My first and most important question is what is the best type of guitar to learn on between the electric and acoustic? I was told it was an acoustic at one point by a friend so I got rid of my electric 😢 so now I’m in the process of needing to get a new one so I can finally learn how to play!! Thank you! Congratulations again! This is going to be awesome!!

Élton Zobisch I'm sure Syn and Papa can explain better, but besides theory, I just practice playing in the electric and the techniques differ a lot from the acoustic. So my advice is to practice in the instrument you wanna actually play, because they are not the same.

First off. My name is Kallie. I have tried to pick up guitar for four years now. It was really hard for me to balance beginners practice of a guitar while having to practice a Clarinet and the duties of marching band, concert band, and other musical activities. My schedule was always (and still kinda is) busy. My uncle had given me a guitar in hopes I could learn to play and, I really want to learn. I've tried everything from looking in a book, to video toturals but I'm still really struggling. I can't afford lessons and I'm really confident that this website will help me achieve the goals I have set (that being to start a band with my friends and prefrom in local downtown Nashville bars and finally being able to play a guitar) I can't wait to start! Amy Jenkins Hi I'm Amy. I am a beginner when it comes to guitars, I am also a self taught (drawing) Artist (I drew my profile picture). My interest in guitar started when I played Guitar Hero when I was about 9 years old that is also when I started my discovery of Rock and Metal. I'm from the South and the people around me mostly listened to the local country station on the radio with some classic rock sprinkled in. My first metal bands were Nu metal bands such as Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, and Korn. My Neighbor bought me Rocksmith (a game) for my birthday a few months ago. I got my hands on an electric guitar played the game a few times (I only got 64% accuracy on 4.6% difficulty on Bat Country lol. Pretty advanced song for a total noob) and here we are. Nice to meet you all. Sorry if I got off topic there. I have a tendency to ramble. I hope everyone is having a wonderful day.

I play on acoustic guitar and i know that i'm hot that talented to make great riffs and solos. But it will be good to learn a little more of the technic and try to pratice it.

Gerben Thanks so much for this site. I'm getting my first guitar (electric) very soon, this'll help me out a ton! Also I have a suggestion: maybe list A7X songs related to the lesson in the description? Then you get a good sense of progress (I think?) and it's just overall cool as you're (the father of) the guitarist in A7X.

Wes Summers Very awesome school! I’ve been waiting forever for this! I’ve been playing guitar for 10 years now. I practice everyday for 1-3 hours. My only problem is lack of knowledge on theory. There’s nothing that I haven’t been able to learn and play (teqnique wise) and I’m always able to write my own material. But I want to learn more on what makes music, music. The theory behind it all. I feel like this site is going to do wonders for everyone! I’ll be sure to post videos and tips that I’ve learned along my journey as well as continuing to learn more from Syn and Papa! Thank you guys for this awesome learning experience!
Brian Haner Sr.
Reply hidden. Show this reply
Brian Haner Sr. That's awesome, Wes! Most guitar players have more technique than theory. In this first iteration of the school, we concentrated on theory and technique basics. Syn and I are working on adding videos dealing with application; how to apply theory and technique to create solos, etc. We would definitely appreciate you posting videos and tips to help others. That's what it's all about! Cheers! PG

Sabine Heimans Hi guys! Excited for this place to finally be open! I have wanted to play the guitar for years but somehow I just never really got around to it. This school is a good push to finally pick up a guitar and learn to play it! My question; all these videos are with an electric guitar. As someone who has never played before and does not own a guitar yet, would you recommend purchasing an acoustic first or go electric right away? Does it matter for the learning process? And perhaps any recommendations in what to buy for a first guitar? You don't wanna go all out but you don't want to buy something shitty either. Sorry for the many questions! Much love and congrats on finally opening your school after so many years of work!
Syn Gates

Syn Gates Welcome Sabine so glad to have you here! All of the lessons are applicable to both instruments. You can shred on acoustic as well as electric and the same goes for playing rhythm and song writing. I hope you have fun!
Arjun Bali
Reply hidden. Show this reply
Arjun Bali The choice of guitar completely depends on the type of music you're fond of. If you're more into music centered around the acoustic guitar, it makes sense to buy an acoustic guitar. If you're into metal/blues/rock etc, it's a better idea to buy an electric guitar because you will actually be able to reproduce the music you're listening to. Also, electric guitars are easier to play and more comfortable for beginners. Entry level instruments from Epiphone and Squier are the first things I can suggest off the top of my head when it comes to electric guitars.
Brian Haner Sr.
Reply hidden. Show this reply
Brian Haner Sr. Sabine! How are you, Sweetie! So nice to hear from you. Depends on what you want to play. If you want to do an indie thing then maybe acoustic. But if you want something a bit more rock, then I would suggest you buy an electric and a small practice amp. Maybe a Squire Strat or an Epiphone Les Paul. They are really inexpensive and great guitars to learn on. Hugs! PG

Ruby Calypso Thank you so much for including the anatomy and the explanation of the physics. I am learning guitar basics so I can test the ones my partner, Coda, and I create. This site is really amazing and I feel like it speaks my language. As a MerMaven who plays ukulele I am disappointed to have no tremolo for diving. This was one of the many reasons I got into luthering. I look forward to diving deeper into music and community with everyone here. It is refreshing to find others looking to expand themselves and their skill by connecting with others. We do need a balance between private practice and community practice. We need to learn to play well with others. I am preaching to myself. My musicality was not supported growing up, so I learned to be not seen and not heard. That made the step to playing with others a dam blocking my flow. I play more with others now and I am still super uncomfortable but I get a bit more comfortable each time. 🙂 Thank's again for this amazing school and community. Take care of yourselves, because you *ARE* worth it!!! *hugs*

Mervin Moras The way you play is more important than the tone of your guitar. A great player can make any guitar through any amp sound great and unique! So keep practicing and be creative! 🙂
Brian Haner Sr.
Reply hidden. Show this reply
Brian Haner Sr. Agreed. But great tone inspires a guitarist to play better. No great guitar player wants to play a cheap guitar with bad tone. They can do it - but they won't be happy. Tone, chops, good equipment - it's all important.

Tyler Carlock Syn and Brian, you guys are hugely influential in my admiration to become a guitarist. I started many years ago but never really dug into it as much as I'd like. Anyhow, I bought a guitar last week in preparation for Syngates school. I love starting at square one to hone my fundamentals. Brian Sr. When I realized you were Syns father after watching you with Jeff Dunham I was so jealous of your Father/Son relationship. I only hope to have the same influence on my son one day. Syn, you have some of the greatest guitar influential playing styles. The fact you and your father are passing this knowledge on to all us fans is truely incredible. After seeing you play live in 2010 in Denver I have been a diehard Syn Gates fan. You sir, are an inspiration! Since then, I've seen you in Denver 3 times, and about to see you next month in Wichita. Keep up the good work and I am very excited to enjoy your school launch. Congratualations to both of you!

Jake Young I learned on a Kramer that cost $69 dollars..17 years later I still enjoy that guitar! I think one of the most important things for a guitar is a good setup! There are multiple videos on YouTube of people demonstrating proper setups..if you don't feel comfortable maybe ask a friend or take it to a reputable guitar shop and ask if you can stick around and watch while they do it most shops are cool enough to let you!

Sachin Agarwal Just to add on to the question. I have been playing guitar for a long time now and the reason i have this question is because its easy to play some licks/riffs on the better guitars than it is on the cheap and not so good ones. That gets me wondering whether i would have saved some time if i had bought a better first guitar.
