In this lesson we go over the Dorian mode – it’s scale construction and related chords.

The Dorian Mode is definitely one of the most useful tools to have at your disposal!

As usual, apply everything you know so far to this scale as well as learning your favorite licks from Papa Gates’ awesome solo!

Make sure to practice at slow tempos at first and gradually increase the tempo to accommodate your comfort level with the metronome and backing tracks provided.

Joshua Simpson I'm having the hardest time figuring out how to apply the modes. I tried jamming to a Neo soul vibe in "Fm" but the progression is Fm7 Gm7 and F#maj9... I can't figure out if the Fm is being borrowed as a 2 from Ebmaj or if it is actually the 6 from Abmaj. Every change that happens from those chords throws me off and I can't put it together. What mode do you recommend I start digging at to get a better grasp of chord changes and how to make my playing sound "modal"?

Brian Haner Sr. OK. Let's figure it out. Fm7 & Gm7 definitely sound like F Dorian (Key of Eb). If we were in F Aeolian (Key of Ab), the Fm7 would work but we would have a Gm7b5 - not a Gm7. So let's stick with F Dorian. Obviously, GbMaj9 is not part of the chord family. I would have to hear the jam to see exactly how it's laid out, but it sounds like in this case it's a tritone substitution chord for a V. So it must be treated as an individual chord. We can find the "like" tones in our chord and use those. So a GbMaj9 is Gb, Bb,Db, F & Ab, So Bb, F & Ab are in the chord AND in F Dorian. But if we really want to open this up we need to think of it as a "stand alone" chord. In other words, we have to leave F Dorian to improvise over this chord. So let's try a Gb Major scale. Most of it works, but the B in that scale sounds atrocious. So let's try a Gb Lydian scale (Key of Db). Ah! That gives us a C instead of a B and sounds much better. So F Dorian over the Fm7 & Gm7 and then Gb Lydian over the GbMaj9. Anyone else want to tackle this one? Would love to hear another opinion.

Ryan Vega How come the 2nd pattern here is different then the 2nd pattern of gmaj scale you showed before? I've been playing with it in different keys to backing tracks but just wondering if I've been doing it wrong.
